A Milwaukee man who suspected the people he just sold painkillers to were police officers has been charged with killing one and wounding another during a shooting on Good Hope Road last month.

The victims, all from Washington County, pulled into a McDonald's at W. Good Hope Road and N. Teutonia Ave. and at first told police they were random targets, but later admitted they had just left a drug deal before the shooting.

Shomeek L. Johnson, 18, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide and first-degree reckless injury, both as a party to the crime.

After one of his passengers, 25-year-old David Stange of West Bend, died, the driver told detectives what had really happened: The three men came to Milwaukee to buy opioid pain pills from a known contact. They stopped somewhere on N. 43rd St., and the third man got out of their Chevy Tahoe and into the back seat of a Toyota Avalon.

After the second victim, a 36-year-old man from Lomira who is now paralyzed from the neck down, recovered enough to be interviewed, he told police that he had given his contact $120 for 10 Percocet pills.

As he got back in the Tahoe, the Toyota pulled around and the driver — who was not the victim's drug contact — accused the two other men of being police officers. They said they were not and drove off, but the Toyota followed them until the shooting in the westbound lanes of Good Hope Road.
