Maton was founded in 1946 by Bill May, who created the company’s name (pronouncedMAY-ton) by combining his last name and the word “tone.” Back inthe ’40s, quality guitars weren’t readily available in Australiaso Maton quickly became the founding father of theAustralian guitar industry. They began manufacturinghigh-quality acoustic instruments and ventured intoelectric guitars in the late ’50s. Their first solidbodyelectric was called the Mastersound in 1958, and theMS500 series followed soon thereafter. It quickly becamea favorite for many musicians—including George Harrison,who played a Maton MS500 early in his career. The guitarwas reissued in 2008 as a 50th-anniversary model, and nowMaton has introduced a semi-hollowbody version of that guitar—the MS500/HC reviewed here.Proven Design, New Twists

As you’d expect from its origins in thelate ’50s, the MS500/HC exudes a retrovibe. Everything from the pickups andpickguard to the headstock with theoriginal logo from 1946 contributes to thethrowback nostalgia. One of the coolestfeatures is the 3-way, gearshift-style rotarypickup selector, which features kitschy settingnames: “Cool” for the neck pickup,“Midway” for both, and “HiFi” for the bridgepickup. The shape and position of the switchallow for fast and easy switching betweenmodes. Plus, there’s something about having arotary switch with a little handle that’s a lot more funthan a regular toggle switch.

The Queensland maple body and blackwood tonecap are probably not a tonewood combination mostAmerican guitarists are used to.
